Session 2: Europe 7 – USA 5

Session 2 – Saturday 14:00

After last night’s thrilling encounters which eventually saw the European quartet take a 4-2 lead, today’s two sessions promise

Mika Koivuniemi

even more excitement.

The schedule this afternoon calls for the normal opening Baker match and then segues into five

Bill O'Neill

alternating doubles and singles matches.

Team order for the Baker match:
Europe: Osku Palermaa, Mika Koivuniemi, Dominic Barrett, Paul Moor.
USA: Chris Barnes, Bill O’Neill, Tommy Jones, Mike Fagan.

Doubles matches will be played ‘Scotch Doubles’ style, bowlers alternating shots.

A reversal of Baker team fortune for the Europeans and they are now on a roll, leading the American visitors, 5-2.

The Europeans have a histroy of Baker team losses so it is good to see them on a winning streak. They were helped on their way with Chris Barnes, the American captain, missing a single pin, the 4-pin, in the opening frame, he then had the baby split (3-10) in his next frame.

It was a disappointment for Europe’s Paul Moor to leave the 3-6-7 split in his frame, the fourth, as he was following three strikes. He made up for that with his next frame, helping his mates to six strikes in a row and a fine 252 opener.

Wow! What a squeaker the first doubles match turned out to be, both duos going five frames with strikes before that stubborn 10-pin withstood the Jones’ onslaught. It was all downhill for the Americans after that as their two opponents kept up their strike rate. Maybe the crowd’s clap-concerto in the tenth frame put off Barrett sealing the perfect game, a feat we haven’t seen here for two years,

Now Tommy Jones and Paul Moor stay at the specially-installed lane in the Barnsley Metrodome for a singles duel.

Solid bowling by Tommy Jones brought the American deficit back to three points as he slaughtered Paul Moor, 279-199, in the opening singles match for this session. Jones left the 10-pin in frame five to spoil a chance of his fourth perfect game at the Metrodome but was so, so, impressive with his solid pocket shots.

Moor left and missed the 7-pin in frame three, then the 2-4-6-10 two frames later, so that was that for the lad from Hull.

Back to the doubles now with the two Finns, Palermaa and Koivumiemi looking to dominate O’Neill and Barnes, a very tough assignment.

Not much luck for the European duo as they faced Barnes and O’Neill in the second doubles encounter, Although the visitors had two splits resulting in 6-2 and 7-1 scores in the first and third frames, they had strikes whilst the Europeans came up with 9-spares, so another win for the Americans and overall points scores now of 6-4. The deficit is being pared down.

O’Neill and Palermaa now stay in the spotlight for their singles.

Hmmm! The americans truly have the bit between their teeth as O’Neill gives Palermaa the elbow and brings the overall points score up to 6-5, but that single point still in the Europeans favor.

O’Neill missed a single pin in the second frame and Palermaa took advantage to lead by 12 points in the sixth frame. But then disaster struck as he left the 4-10 split which he failed to convert. Then O’Neill locked on his sights to the strike pocket and never looked back, finishing with seven strikes in a row for a 245-224 win.

The last match of this session proved to be a corker with both doubles teams having a good chance of winning this crucial point. Splits came to be the turning points with the Americans suffering two open frames from those, the Europeans one. But when Jones left the 3-6-9-10 in the first frame and O’Neill taking out just three pins, the pendulum swung in the Europeans favor, picking up the reins in the seventh frame and riding high down the home straight to keep a two point lead.
