A Case of ‘The Nearly’s’
July 15th, 2010 | Published in Breaking News
Two chances of 300s in the second game of Squad 6.
The first to Stuart Williams from England, who arrived at Bowling Pedralbes just two minutes before his name was cancelled from the roster, delayed in traffic coming from the airport. He hit the first ten strikes then left the 10-pin with the eleventh ball.
Then followed Martin Larsen of Sweden. He too had the first ten strikes. Then, when preparing for the eleventh a rogue pin rolled across the pin deck. A pinspotter re-rack did not clear it and a referee had to roll a house ball down the gutter to clear it. That pause was enough to put the lithe Swede off and he too left a single pin, the 4-pin.
“I really thought that had got that strike,” Larsen explained afterwards. He blamed that malfunction on a five-week break from bowling with a vacation in the United States, but is now back, heart and soul, to get 100 per cent for the forthcoming World Championships in Munich, Germany next month.
There’s a Spanish hero in Barcelona tonight as Marcial Ovide from Astunas, in the north of Spain, won the squad and second position in the overall standings after Squad 6 with 1446, aided along the way with a 289 in his fifth game.
There were also the brace of 289s from Martin Larsen and Stuart Williams, both in the second game of this squad.
Larsen (1367) finished runner-up to Ovide and Williams (1360) placed third.
