In addition to his bowling history blog, BJI’s resident historian J.R. Schmidt — author of the monthly “Time Capsule” feature in the magazine — writes a blog on the history of his hometown. It’s called “Unknown Chicago.”

In a recent blog entry on Chicago mobsters and Hollywood’s depiction of them, Dr. Jake includes a great picture of the late actor Boris Karloff on the lanes.

He also relates the tale of how the filmmaker used a close-up of a spinning, slow-to-fall 10-pin to symbolize the Karloff character — who had just been shot after releasing his bowling ball — taking his final breaths.
