Deadlines extended

Is America’s soft economy impacting entries for two of the country’s largest annual tenpin tournaments? It’s possible, considering both events have announced entry deadline extensions.

Entries will continue to be accepted for the 2010 USBC Open Championships in Reno even after the tournament kicks off at the National Bowling Stadium.

Since openings remain available on many squads, USBC officials decided to extend the entry deadline to April 1.

The USBC Women’s Championships also received a deadline extension of nearly a month. Entries for that tournament — which will be held in El Paso, Texas, for the first time ever — originally were to close on Jan. 22. Now, women bowlers have until Feb. 19 to submit their entry forms.

Although the Women’s Championships has been held several times at the National Bowling Stadium, the 2010 edition marks its debut in a convention center setting. The El Paso Convention and Performing Arts Center is the venue, and the temporary equipment installation will include 48 lanes and what is billed as “the world’s largest mobile scoreboard.”

The tournament also is switching to an all-handicap format in 2010.
