It is almost a case of putting ‘House Full” notices outside the popular Bowling Pedralbes in Barcelona in July as over 160 players from 25 nations have signed up for this prestigious event, a silver-rated tournament on the European Bowling Tour (EBT) running July 12-17.
In the 2010 edition, Gery Verbruggen of Belgium defeated England’s Dominic Barrett in a close fought final. This year, with women’s national teams from Finland, France and Sweden using the tournament as practice for the upcoming Women’s World Championships in Hong Kong, there is added luster for the spectators and tougher opposition for the bowlers. There is also a talented group of Malaysian stars heading into Barcelona after competing in the San Marino Open.
Popular Americans on the entry list are Brian Voss, the 2011 Catalonia Open champion, and Mike Fagan. Tournament newcomer is PBA bowler Amleto Monacelli from Venezuela.
